Baby Claire's Bedding and Nursery and Diaper Dilemma

Given that we leave for Cali on Friday and then head to Seattle until March 31st, we won't really be in TX again until I am 31 weeks preggo. In my zeal, this past month I thought maybe I could learn to sew and design all of Claire's nursery to be 100% unique. Nothing but the best for our first born! But let's be realistic... THAT'S NOT going to happen. I would like to learn how to sew at some point, for sure, but maybe NOT right before giving birth... So I had to say goodbye to the warm pink/salmon and green and cream paisley that I fell in love with at JoAnn's fabrics. Another time. Luckily, we found online from my friend Heidi, this great alternative paisley print. I don't want the Pepto Bismol Pink walls or matchy matchy anything in her room, but I at least like this bedding. Los painted a little dresser green for Claire, to put next to a glider, and now we're trying to figure out what kind of crib we want. So hopefully in April her nursery will come together. Just in case she comes early in May:) Diaper options are currently what stress us out most, but other than that things are looking like they'll fall into place nicely before she comes. Would love to hear all your wise counsel on diapers, the more specific the better. Fun fun!

Oooh, I love how it looks with the dark furniture - is that the same set? Where did you find that pic? Cute! What kind of glider did you get? I want a big overstuffed one but I really don't want to pay $400 for it...

Sorry I don't have advice on the diapers. I've become strict about recycling and given up water bottles in exchange for reusable water bottles. And, I'm thinking of composting. That being said, I plan to negate this goodness by using disposable Pampers. I know, not noble. :-(

There are many options that we've considered too. We are going to try a couple of different kinds to see what we like best and go from there.

The ones we are interested in using are Bumgenius they are all in one diapers and are supposed to fit kids from 7-30 lbs. we thought we'd give a couple of those a try. we are also going to get Chinese prefolds and bummis covers.

Since we are new to this too and there are a million options for cloth diapers it seems, we figure try a couple then invest in the ones that we really like.

For a baby shower for Jay our friends planned a poker game where the buy in is a package of diapers, so if all else fails we'll have those as back ups =)

They also have g diapers. They are disposable but good for the planet. You can flush them and compost the wet ones. I thought that was pretty neat too.

I love the nursery! it really is so cute!!!

Casey,

I have a dear friend who is the queen of info on diapering. She'd probably love to chat with you about it. Her name is Tera and her email is teradawn@gmail.com

Heidi- I saw that other pic online, yep, same set:) We haven't bought our glider yet... I want one like you do.

Becky- let me know how it goes, we're interested in those too!

Ok, in true blog stalker fashion, I'm leaving yet another comment...

Just finished reading a comparative article on eco-friendly diapers, and it seems the bumGenius one-size cloth diapers (available at cottonbabies.com) won the cloth diaper category. I might even consider them!

The chlorine-free (non-cloth) aware went to Earth's Best TenderCare diapers.

Geez, my reading choices have been changing recently! ;-)

Hey Case... i LOVE the colors in the nursery...you can always add 'home-made' nursery stuff later. Getting home with 9-ish weeks to plan is still plenty! Don't stress over it. You know we Love love love our cloth diapers. We've used 3 types- BumGenius AND FuzziBunz "Pockets"-both of those are "one size fits 7-30 lbs", but SEVERAL of my friends agree that that is false...they do adjust a ton, but not when kiddos are really small. Actually, Ainsley's One-Size ones STILL don't fit her right-and she's 20 lbs!!! They leak-out the legs IMMEDIATELY. I have another brand of "All-In-Ones" which are a little harder to launder (take longer to dry, stain a little easier, etc..) but with the different sizes, she's been wearing those for this entire 1st year! So, there are TONS of pros/cons. We always have a handful of disposables around for emergencies, but use cloth 90% of the time and love it. It's DEFINITELY more work, but totally worth it to me. =) I've found tons of info on 'cottonbabies.com' and 'breesbums.com'. Good Luck!

Hey Case,
I have to tell you that I still laugh thinking about Clair being the third "C" in a long line of C & C & C & C & C &... =)

I have to disagree with Erica about the one-size BumGenius pocket diapers! We used disposable diapers until Judah was out of the newborn size, but then started with the BumGenius when he was about 10lbs and they have worked great. The newest BumGeniuses (3.0) also have a leak-protection at the top front which is the only place we have had problems with them (but not until he was much bigger). Ours are also holding up well and will hopefully last us through another kid or two =)

The reasons I decided on BumGenius one-size originally:
1. One-size means I don't have to heft over the cash for more diapers as he grows.
2. Dry storage of dirty diapers waiting to be washed instead of having to have a big bucket of diaper water sitting around =P
3. Inserts and shells can be washed together.

Like Erica though, I think it is useful to have a few disposables around for outings, and for those days when if you have to spray off one more poopy diaper you are sure you will be packing Clair up and leaving her on a church doorstep (we all have them!). We have also used disposable at night with Judah now for a couple months because he saves all his pee for about 2am and then will wet through the cloth diaper. New sheets, new pjs, new diaper at 2am = not fun for anyone.

We ordered from cottonbabies.com and they will let you buy one diaper to try it out and then return it (after you've used it!)if you don't like it for a refund, at least with the bumGenius.

Whoa, apparently I have plenty to say about diapers =) I love you and would be happy to chat with you more about it (is there more to say???). I don't have very broad experience though, as we are happy with our bumGenius and haven't tried others.

Love ya! Shan

See, look at the info traded here...I looked when Ainsley woke up and her AIOs (All in Ones) are WonderWorks. I love them...and I've never used a bucket of (nasty!) diaper water, so I'm not sure what Shannon is referring to. I use dry storage for all of them and mix them interchangibly in washing and wearing them. We also use disposable at night (and then with a cloth over top)...my kids are pee-masters overnight! Some of it depends on the kid, too..even with adjustable snaps (on Fuzzibunz) and the velcro (on BumGenius), neither of those work for Ainsley right now...maybe just the size of her thighs. (!?!) We may also have an older version of the BumGenius b/c we got them 2 1/2 years ago...anyway, let us know more questions! Sorry if it seems like contradicting info, you just never know until you try it with these things! I have a friend who tried cloth diapers for over 6 months and her kid's skin was constantly irritated, so she sold them off to someone else...he has SUPER sensitive skin, though. MAJOR issues with it...just fyi

Hi Casey!

All diaper's whether they are disposable or cloth, fit differently. And... all babies are built differently. If you invest in cloth diapers, I would suggest waiting until after your baby is here, and trying just a few of whatever kind you like before buying the whole lot. If you find they leak all the time no matter what, the diaper probably isn't fitting your child right.

That being said, we have Oliver in Swaddlebee's Econappi. They were expensive, but they fit him great and really do have a lot of room to grow in.

Good luck! Mommyhood is awesome, and don't worry.. you will be great parents!

Lane (Cara's older sister) :)
